Covering an area of 1,668 sq km (641 sq miles), Mount Kilimanjaro National Park is famous for holding the snow-capped equatorial mountain. The park is a paradise for the hikers, who love to have the adventurous experience of summiting the highest peak of Africa.

The rocks and ice of Africa’s free-standing mountain present the panoramic view of the landscapes.

Highlights Of The Park

  • "Kilimanjaro" is a mysterious word. It means Mountain of Light, Mountain of Greatness or Mountain of Caravans.
  • The park is located near Moshi town and is placed about 300 km from the equator.
  • The park is classified under the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
  • The mountain’s ecosystem is strikingly varied and beautiful. The trail gently starts from rolling hills and ends in the snowy peak.
  • The peak of the mountain is made up of three volcanoes, Shira, Mawenzi and volcano Kibo. Shira and Mawenzi are extinct volcanoes where Kibo is dormant and can extinct any time.
  • The vegetation of the mountain includes some 2,500 species of plants that are found here are the endemic and beautiful red and yellow impatiens kilimanjari as well as the colorful violet viola.
  • To summit the highest point of Africa, there are seven official routes like Lemosho Route, Shira Route, Machame Route, Rongai Route, Umbwe Route, Marangu Route and Northern Circuit Route.
  • The beautiful sights of the glaciers and the deep crater are rewards to the hikers.
  • Mountain biking tours in the foothills of Kilimanjaro and meeting the Chagga tribe are also great.
  • For exclusive bush experiences, there are many camping sites along the hiking routes.

The Wildlife

A diverse number of animals are inhabitants of the park.

Animals that roam include elephants, leopards, buffaloes, varies antelopes, and primates such as vervet monkeys, colobus monkeys, mitis monkeys, baboons and bushbaby reside inside the park.  

In addition to this, 24 species of bats and 179 highland bird species have also been recorded in the Kilimanjaro National Park.

The Birdlife

  • Over 150 bird species have been recorded in Kilimanjaro National Park among which some are migratory and some are endemic.
  • The most seen birds include resident black shouldered kite, long trailed trogon, white necked raven, blue napped mouse birds, grey hornbill, African fish eagles, white necked barbet, African pygmy kingfisher and red capped robin.
  • November to April offers the best time for bird-watching.
