Marangu Route

Marangu Route

The Coca Cola route or the Marangu route is the oldest and most established of all the routes. Considered the easiest trek of all the routes it certainly isn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination. Acclimatization is a serious concern as the gradual slopes and direct path coupled with limited days on the trek expose you the hardships of altitude sickness. But it’s the cheapest route and the huts on the trails provide for decent accommodation and take the load of the camping equipment off your shoulders and mind.

The 7-day trek takes off through the scenic montane forests with fleeting glimpses of blue monkeys en route to Mandara Hut (2743m) for an overnight stay. Ascending further you will traverse through the heather moorlands enjoying great views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks at the high altitude. Night halt will be at Horombo Hut (3721m), which lies in a valley surrounded by giant lobelia and groundsel, flora which are characteristic of this semi-alpine zone.

Marangu route

Ascending on you will cross the alpine desert lands to reach the Kibo hut(4704) for an overnight rest This is where the effects of altitude start to kick in and the weather gets harsher in the day and the nights get extremely cold. This is also the site from where the ascent to the summit resumes with a scramble up to Gilman’s Point. From Gilman’s Point, it is a further 3 hour round trip along the crater’s edge to Uhuru Peak, and voila! You have reached the highest point in Africa

The descent is through the same route.
