Arusha National Park is only a 40-minute drive from Arusha making it a minimal travel day tour. Arusha National Park is host to black and white colobus monkeys, giraffes, zebras, blue monkeys, waterbuck, bushbuck, buffalo and many bird species. Flamingoes can be seen on the Great Momela Lakes in this Park. The views throughout the Park are beautiful but especially the views from Ngurdoto Crater. This crater houses a marshland which is home to many grazing animals.

Lake Manyara is part of the Great Eastern Rift Valley. It is a soda lake which supports flamingoes and other water birds (more than 400 species) both endemic and migratory. Cormorants, storks, and pelicans are found here in abundance. In the National Park, there are tree-climbing lions, elephants, buffaloes, baboons, leopards, impalas, waterbuck, dik-dik and giraffe. Lake Manyara National Park is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours drive from Arusha.

Tarangire is the 6th largest National Park in Tanzania. This park will offer the visitor a chance to view four of the Big Five animals as there are no rhinos in this park. Tarangire has over 550 recorded bird species. The Tarangire river sustains the lives of the animals in the area during the dry season. This river also attracts the migratory animals during the dry season when they are calving.

The spectacular caldera in this area is the largest unfilled and unbroken caldera in the world. The crater is 20 kilometers across, 610 meters deep and has an area of 300 square kilometers. The Big 5 can be viewed in this Conservation area as well as cheetahs, zebra, eland, Thompson’s and Grant’s gazelles, caracal and civets. This area is also famous for the footprints found in Laetoli by paleontologist Mary Leakey. The Olduvai (Oldupai) Gorge is found in this region as well and is a significant site for the understanding of human evolution. Ngorongoro is one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

Kahawa Coffee Plantation Tour and Shanga Shangaa Social Enterprise
Kahawa means coffee in Swahili. This organic coffee plantation supports the local village here at the base of Mount Meru. The villagers have formed a cooperative, and the beans are grown and roasted on site. Although both arabica and robusta plants are found locally, the arabica coffee is the specialty here. There is a scientific and research plantation in the village operated by a local grower who is studying pests and diseases on local plants and how to eradicate these using natural methods. This visit will be in the morning.
Shanga is a social enterprise which employs approximately 70 people with disabilities who create crafts, jewelry and glassware using recycled materials. These products are sold in Tanzania and around the world. The origin story of this workshop is heartwarming, and they welcome visitors. Visit Shanga after the coffee plantation.

Ilkiding’a is a village approximately 5 km from Arusha. There is a beautiful hike to a local waterfall in a forest preservation area with lunch after the walk. Transport from Arusha to the first junction in the village than a hike of approximately one hour through the village and into the waterfall conservation area. The hike to and from the waterfall is steep and moderate fitness is required. The waterfall area hosts a beautiful collection of ferns, begonias, and other moisture loving shade plants. After hiking back up to the village, lunch of a traditional Maasai BBQ will be served at the Themi Falls Leisure Park.
